I love to give gifts. Much more than receiving ones. Why? Because I love to shop, especially for unique things. And, I love to see people get excited about new beautiful things. It is like taking someone you care about to a restaurant you love, or to travel somewhere special together, to share the place and the moment.
At least once a day, and not only during the holidays, people ask me: which gift is the right one? They think I have the answers because I work in fashion, retail, and purchasing. The truth is that I find myself thinking a lot about this, too, and that it can get complicated. Not a matter of life and death, but really not straightforward. The gift should be the right match for the personality, status, mood, expectation, and so on.
Light, bold, and can carry your whole life. Leather in different colors.
So, the more I thought about this question, the more pressing it became: what is the perfect gift to get? Finally, I came to a conclusion. Almost a recipe, really. When I look for a gift for someone, I look for something that this person wouldn’t buy for themselves. I don’t try to come up with something they really need: I’m sure that they will be getting these things, sooner or later. But, those things that are not really necessary to have, or those you won’t be buying because they are too expensive or impractical—that is the perfect gift. It opens up the receiver to something new, and over time they will appreciate it the most.
Every year before the holidays, when I do purchasing for the store, I create a list of items that are less practical, very unique, that I wouldn’t be buying for myself, but will be happy to receive. Here are some examples.
