When I moved to the US 11 years ago (but who’s counting?) there were two things I was most excited about
- The fact that I could buy a KitchenAid mixer at a reasonable price; and
- Getting a chance to shop the world famous sales.
I arrived in the country in October and immediately set out to realize my American dreams. The day after I landed I went shopping and bought my red mixer. After that I emptied my closets and started to count the days until the infamous Black Friday – the post Thanksgiving day frenzy known around the world for its stampede-inducing sales.
When the day came I went to my favorite stores, chose my desired items, and headed to the registers. Yet surprise surprise, my dreams of scoring low-cost goodies were interrupted by the rude awakening that none of the items I wanted were on sale!
My friends and the sales associates blamed my expensive taste. It’s true that I like quality things, but I thought (silently, and to myself) that a true sale should include everything – not just seasonal items, and those that stores weren’t able to sell otherwise.
A few years later I found myself opening my store and the first decision I made was that I would have real sales, that twice a year I would discount ALL items – even the classic ones. Many of my colleagues raised their eyebrows at the idea, but I wanted to create the kind of an experience that I dreamt of when I first came to the U.S. So here you go! The RUTI winter sale starts Friday January 10. It is storewide and includes shoes, jewelry, belts, new arrivals – literally, everything.
The store will be well-stocked, but if you’ve ever been to a really good sale, you know it can be competitive! My advice: come early to make sure you get the items you want in your size. Happy shopping!
